The Juniper Institute for Young Writers Online

What are you writing as the weather gets warmer? A story? A poem? A thing-that-you-don’t-know-what-it-is-but-you-know-you-have-to-write-it?
Writers need community to flourish, so we are inviting you to The Juniper Institute for Young Writers Online. This summer, July 20-24, we want to help you dive into your projects by providing a digital platform for you to share, learn, and write!
During this intensive week we will have a combination of synchronous events and writing labs in addition to writing prompts and event recordings that you can complete on your own time.
If you participate in the full program, your daily small-group Writing Labs will include direct feedback from your instructors and peers. You’ll also be a part of our Participant Readings throughout the week where you can share your work with a wider audience.

Want to generate some new writing ideas? Each morning you can explore different writing and genre topics in our wide variety of Craft Sessions, where you’ll also learn from different instructors and engage with different participants than your Writing Lab.
Apply to the Full Program
Interested in a more self-guided writing experience this summer? Check out our Writing Packages, which have more asynchronous options in addition to some of the live events during the week.
Register for a Writing Package
Until June 1, the early bird pricing for the full program is $800 (regular cost: $900). Early bird pricing on writing packages ranges from $180-$375.
We look forward to writing with you this summer!

RPI Architecture Career Discovery Program - Virtual

Architecture Career Discovery Program, which will be held Monday, July 6 – Friday, July 17, 2020. This two-week class, taught entirely online, is designed to expose students to the experience of enrolling in a high-quality undergraduate architecture program. High school students entering 10th, 11th, and 12th grade in the fall, who are interested in future careers in architecture or design related fields and have a curiosity about the world, are encouraged to apply.
Course outline:
This two-week class, taught entirely online, is designed to expose students to the experience of enrolling in a high-quality undergraduate architecture program. The core of this course is studio work. In studio, students are immersed in a rigorous creative process that starts with an idea, the development of abstract models, and ultimately leads to the design of an exciting and innovative architectural building proposal. Critique and evaluation of studio work is continuous, occurring in one-on-one discussions with the instructor and in larger group reviews with invited architectural critics. Studio work is complemented by a series of lectures and presentations, which explore the broader context of architectural practice, contemporary projects and practitioners, as well as more technical concerns such as drawing and model making.

Register Now

We look forward to working with your students. If you have any questions, please contact the Rensselaer Summer Programs Office at soaps@rpi.edu

2020 Vermont Young Writers' Conference

There will be one VIRTUAL writing conference from Thursday, June 25, to Sunday, June 28. Going cyber will allow us to expand our workshop offerings, while maintaining our traditional schedule of events. It is our hope that you will emerge from three days of VYWC as enriched, interconnected, & invincible as if we had been circling the fire on Summer's Gale Farm.
As ever, expect to participate in over ten hours of intensive fiction, poetry, songwriting, creative non-fiction, script writing, and filmmaking workshops; exchange and critique manuscripts; attend interactive craft sessions; and meet one-on-one with your workshop leader. In addition to Moth storytelling, poetry slams, & open mic sessions, we will also offer agri-tutorials on beekeeping, soil building, & environmental stewardship.

Please note: Instead of offering chaperone-only writing workshops, VYWC's virtual platform will allow us to consider any adult applicant who would like to attend the conference. Whether you are a published author or a student of the arts, an intensive VYWC workshop will offer you the opportunity to plug in, dust off, and invigorate your work with other writerly teachers, parents, & students.

To accommodate this change, we have extended our APPLICATION DEADLINE to May 14.  If you have already submitted your application, rest assured the review process will begin shortly. For more information, please visit our website: https://vermontyoungwritersconference.com/

Summer Opportunity: The Experiment in International Living has gone Digital!

Over the course of 85+ years, we have solidified our reputation as the most experienced provider of high school summer abroad programs.

We have transitioned our summer 2020 programming to The Experiment Digital.

With COVID-19, cultural exchange is important, now more than ever. Designed to connect youth living in every corner of the world, The Experiment Digital is a fully funded (free!) exchange program conducted entirely online. It prepares them to be more civically engaged by teaching them how to design and implement a service project for their local communities. Apply online by April 15th.

For eight weeks (four hours per week), students log on to an interactive platform to learn about leadership, civic engagement, and interact with their peers through videos, chats, webinars, and games. Students come away from the program with:
  • an enhanced understanding and practice of leadership.
  • increased involvement in civil society and volunteering.
  • mutual understanding between youth from different countries
The Experiment anticipates again offering our traditional, in-person exchange programs in summer 2021. Browse our programs.

Boston University College of Communication will continue to host its Summer Journalism Institute. By "making Boston their beat," students will have the opportunity to build a solid foundation in journalistic writing and become better storytellers while reporting the facts.
Students will attend a college-level writing class in the morning. In the afternoon, they are assigned to newsrooms to work with award-winning journalists such as Pulitzer winner, Rochelle Sharpe, as their editor to cover different stories – entertainment, politics, sports, metro, and investigations – in the Boston area. Students also have the option of selecting our photojournalism track with veteran photojournalist and Boston Globe journalist, Stephen Haines. Events range from special guest lectures with journalists at local news stations, such as WBUR and WGBH, to exploring historic sites and museums, including Fenway Park and the Museum of Fine Arts.
Our two-week workshops begin on June 22, July 6, and July 20. At the end of each session, your student will walk away with:
  • Articles to add to their professional portfolio
  • A unique experience to write about in their college application essay
  • An appreciation of journalism and the confidence to use their voice to tell stories in their own communities
  • New friends
While we accept applications on a rolling basis, we strongly encourage students to apply early to secure their seat. To qualify for this opportunity, please have them apply.

If students are accepted to the program and pay the registration fee by April 30, they will receive a special discount of $500 off the tuition. Just pass along this discount code to them to use online: BUSUMMER20.

Data-Driven Decision Making
Learn how businesses harness data and how talented individuals use the information to solve serious local and global problems.

Google That
Googling: a task that takes seconds. If you were asked to find something uniquely specific, could you find it? And, if your search generated endless results, would you be able to determine the best one?

Information Security
Information security is important to people, corporations, organizations - even to the cities we live in. Learn more about how to protect yourself online.

Privacy and Ethics

User Experience Design
People interested in User Design strive to build and create digital products and services that meet the needs of humans. Why will they want to use your product, what will it do for them, how will the product work and for whom? Could you design the next Snapchat or iPhone?
It Girls Attendees
The late night challenge was especially memorable! I went back to my math teacher at school and related the graphing designs to what we were learning in class. This overnight and my previous visits to Syracuse, have made me feel certain of my choice to apply early decision to the iSchool!
