Webinar: COVID-19 & College Admissions: Planning for the Year Ahead

Hi Families,

COVID-19 has disrupted nearly every aspect of the college admissions process, from standardized testing to extracurricular activities and academics. How can students best prepare for success during these uncertain times? Join us as our panel of former college admissions officers explore answers to questions like:

• How can families conduct a productive college search virtually?
• What should students do about impacted extracurricular activities?
• How will college admissions officers evaluate future applicants?
• Will universities remain test-optional - and how much will standardized testing matter?

We will also provide the latest updates on how the coronavirus has impacted the college admissions process as well as answer questions from attendees.

The path to college can be both exciting and anxiety provoking. Thinking about deadlines, acceptance rates and financial concerns, along with finding the best academic and social fit, can be stressful.

On our next episode Dr. Denise Pope, Co-Founder of Challenge Success and Senior Lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Education; and Candice Mackey, College Counselor, discuss how to support your students’ well being and reduce unnecessary pressure around the college admissions process.

During this candid conversation they will also debunk college myths, especially those surrounding rankings and selectivity.

Please share this information with your students and their families so that they can join us on Zoom for the broadcast. All episodes include live Q&A with the experts.

Advice for Applying to College During COVID-19

From the Admissions Office at the College of the Holy Cross:

The latin phrase virtute et numine is the inspiration for the phrase "by grit and grace."  I am reminded of that sentiment because a few weeks ago, we passed the six month mark - 180 days since that Friday in March when my co-workers and I left the committee room (that you have visited) and we have not been back since.

Over these six months, in conversations over Zoom with high school students, we in the Admission Office have been hearing stories of canceled standardized test dates, the challenges of remote, hybrid and in-person learning and all of the resulting stress and anxiety that has been added to the college application process.

We are simultaneously inspired by these students’ stories of perseverance and saddened by the heightened anxiety that they are experiencing.  In response, we have created a website and this video to help address the most common questions and concerns about applying to college during this unforeseen pandemic.

We will get through the next six months the same way we got through the last six months - by demonstrating compassion for each other, and, most of all, by grit and grace.

Best wishes
Drew
